This crib is convertible – this means that it’ll grow with your baby. It can convert into one of four main uses
- Crib
- Toddler Bed
- Day Bed
- Full Bed with Headboard
We’ll break down each type of bed and its use below:
Crib
This is probably the main mode you’re looking at when purchasing a new crib. This is the most protective mode, with slat bars raising up on all sides. Be aware that children are usually able to climb up and over the side rail by 18-24 months of age (see this article). In the classic crib mode – you are able to adjust the mattress to 3 different positions (this is actually one fewer positions than we typically see). But, 3 positions is still very versatile and usable by the vast majority of parents. You’ll want to use the highest setting initially as most infants are unable to climb anything yet. However, as your child grows and becomes more active you’ll need to lower the height of the mattress. This is to ensure your child is safe as they sit/stand up and move around.
Keep in mind that you’ll need to ensure that the crib doesn’t have any extra items in it such as stuffed plushies, pillows, or blankets. This is to reduce the chance of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome).
This crib doesn’t come with a mattress, and it is extremely important that you purchase a mattress that fits the proper dimensions of your crib (this is to prevent open gaps that you baby can fall into and get stuck. We recommend this particular mattress: Delta Children Twinkle Stars Fiber Core Crib and Toddler Mattress.
Toddler Bed
In the toddler bed configuration the bed is dropped to its lowest setting and the main side rail is removed. The removal of the side rail allows for easy access for your toddler. The manufacturer recommends installing the toddler side rail so that way your toddler will be less likely to roll out of bed accidentally. You can find the side rail here: Delta Children Toddler Guardrail #0080.However, we’ve found that it functions just fine without the side rail.
Day Bed
The day bed configuration is almost exactly the same as the toddler bed configuration except that it doesn’t require the installation of the side rail. This configuration is good as a toddler bed, but also as a general sitting space for your child for storytime, watching TV, or playing with toys. This mode is adequate in our opinion to be a standard bed for your child, at least until he/she grows a bit too tall for it.
Full Bed
To convert to a full bed you will require this particular kit: Delta Children Wooden Full Size Bed Rails. At this point, you’ll have removed almost all the side rails and only kept the headboard. You’ll also still need a full sized mattress – we recommend this particular one: Primasleep Mattress, although any full size mattress should work.
